Motivation through communication

Communication has to be at the heart of every strategy, says the new FD of T-Mobile UK, Lars Nordmark.

Nordmark, who recently moved to the UK division of the telecoms group from T-Mobile Austria, says when leading your flock, it’s important to know what each employee's objectives are, and how that can be linked to company strategy.

“Understanding what each person wants to do gives them motivation as each person feels he’s being taken seriously and wakes up every morning wanting to go to work,” he says.

“What’s important is to develop a strategy where you have communication. You need to be on the floor and meeting people, and getting everybody looking in the same direction.”

Nordmark believes it’s also important for the finance team to get out of the office and meet the customers. “I try to spend at least a week in the stores a year and that’s certainly a good experience. I also try to go to the call centres and spend a couple of hours listening to conversations with customers.”
