From FD to COO
by Catherine Woods - Monday, 3rd March 2008 -
Most of you would agree that the role of the finance director has evolved to become more strategic.
It’s not just about numbers any more; it’s about finding ways to help the business move forward. It’s about working with the other members of the executive team to foster growth.
But where will the role evolve to next? One could argue it may become even more closely linked to the chief operating officer position. Many FDs already act as COO while others are promoted to the role. Just last week, Keith Allen became COO at Mecom while John Cresswell relinquished his FD duties to become a full-time COO at ITV.
Cobra FD Dynshaw Italia certainly sees a link. “What I find is that the finance director role is more moving to a COO sort of role," he says. "I see more overlap in that rather than with a CEO role.”
